How Essential Oils Can Help a Child On the Autism Spectrum

Posted by Gabriel Williams on

In recent years, essential oils have become increasingly popular to use in tandem with meditation, yoga, therapies, and other wellness practices. They are known for their unique health benefits, use in aromatherapy, or for simply adding a pleasant scent to a room. For children on the autism spectrum, they offer a number of benefits that work in tandem with therapeutic strategies, sensory play, and other treatments.

So, what exactly are essential oils? Simply put, they are the liquid extract of different types of plants, such as herbs, spices, roots, flowers, and leaves. The liquids that make up essential oils are the purest forms of these liquid extracts, without being diluted by water or mixed with other particles. Certain essential oils can have beneficial mental and emotional properties that can help your child with autism. Keep in mind that essential oils can be used for aromatherapy or applied to the skin but shouldn’t be ingested.

Frankincense

Frankincense is an anti-inflammatory that has been known to have health benefits such as helping fight bacterial infections, treating fungus, and reducing swelling. For children with autism or ADHD, it has been known to sharpen focus, reduce negative emotions, and relieve anxiety.

Lavender

Lavender has natural calming properties by use with aromatherapy. Children on the autism spectrum and with ADHD often struggle with sleep. Using this oil in a diffuser or perhaps dabbing some on the pillow is a great way to promote calm and help with sleep. It is also highly beneficial in any circumstance where high anxiety causes a meltdown.

Peppermint

This essential oil has many benefits, along with smelling fresh and happy. Peppermint has been known to improve digestion, relieve headaches, and loosen tight muscles. Children with autism or ADHD benefit from a calming effect and improved mental focus.

Ylang Ylang

Ylang Ylang is known for being a particularly good-smelling floral scent but also has numerous health benefits. The scent has been known to have antidepressant properties and is great for elevating mood.

Sandalwood

The oils extracted from the roots of the sandalwood tree are known to help fight inflammation and viral infections. When used in aromatherapy, sandalwood has great calming effects, while promoting mental clarity and focus.

Vetiver

This essential oil is a known anti-inflammatory and has been used to help wounds. Vetiver is also great for helping with concentration and patience.

Buyer beware, though.  Not all essential oils are the same.  We recommend seeking guidance from your local, independent health food store to be sure you are getting pure, quality products.
